Equal Health's India Camp, was held Saturday 28 September to Sunday 13 October 2019.
Our team was made up of disability trained allied health professionals - Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists, Physiotherapists and Special education teachers. Placements took place in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu at the Spastics Society of Tiruchirappalli and the Society of Education Village Action and Improvement (SEVAI).
October 2019 saw Equal Health take a blended team of health professionals and educators to Tamil Nadu, where the focus was on preventative and restorative allied healthcare and education. The team comprised of 3 Speech Pathologists, 3 Physiotherapists, 1 Occupational Therapist, 1 Social Worker, 2 Psychologists, 8 Teachers and 1 Special Education Assistant. The team split their time between the Spastic Society of Tiruchirappalli, SEVAI Raja School and SEVAI Boys Shelter Home. Specific projects included building sensory frames and all-terrain wheelchairs to facilitate participation, designing accessible classroom lessons for children with learning difficulties, providing education to parents about safe feeding techniques, and improving a playground area to encourage physical activity for children with cerebral palsy. Our partner sites were thrilled with our contributions and we even made the evening news and not one, but four local newspapers!
